What I Love about our Cellar Door....
The best thing about our cellar door is when you come here you are being served by Linda , Kim or Nigel who own and run Galafrey Wines. Not some uni student who'd rather be somewhere else or some poorly trained staff who doesn't talk to you about the wine like it's a long lost friend. But that's what you get with us. We are friendly, down to earth people who are passionate about the wine and love a chat about the wine, weather, or region.
The most famous thing about our cellar door is the dog! Bruce, the Jack Russell. We called him Bruce because he is a big dog trapped in a little dog's body, like most Jack Russell's are. Everyone loves the way he comes down to the carpark and greets you at the car. Then he'll lead you up to the path to cellar door. They always ask about him "what kind of dog is he? what's his name?" Our dogs are so famous that they are on a postcard at the winery, you can send it to your friends and Bruce can greet them at the letter box too!
The other best thing, which is often under rated and we unfortunately take for granted, is our view. It is truly stunning and emphasizes exactly what this region is. Diverse farm land and undulating country of rolling hills. You can see the Porongurups, Stirling's ranges and the Mount Barker Hill from our Property. In fact if Mount Barker hill wasn't there we'd see all the way to Albany, that's how high up we are.
The soil is gravel loam soils. When you drive up the drive way there is vines either side of you with small mounds at the bottom of the vines exposing the gravel rocks. I've had people ask if we sprinkle the rocks out on the mounds for effect "no, that's how it naturally accrues". Combine that with the gnarly vines showing their age it makes for such a pretty picture. Then add the seasons of autumn winter, summer and spring. Changing colours, vines full of leaves, vines with no leaves, vines neatly pruned and tied down, dryness of summer and the greenness of winter. It truly is a magical property, no wonder we make great wine!
