Meet Kim Tyrer: Continuing a Family Legacy at Galafrey Wines

For Kim Tyrer, winemaking is more than a profession—it's a way of life.

Raised among the vines in Mount Barker, Western Australia, Kim grew up immersed in the rhythms of vineyard life. From an early age, she watched the dedication, hard work, and passion that her family poured into every vintage. Those experiences shaped not only her understanding of wine but also her deep connection to the land that has sustained Galafrey Wines for generations.

Today, as CEO and Head Winemaker, Kim continues the family legacy with a blend of tradition, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to quality.

A Family Story Rooted in the Great Southern

Galafrey Wines was established by Kim's parents, the late Geoffrey and Margaret Tyrer, who recognised the extraordinary potential of the Mount Barker region long before it became internationally acclaimed for premium cool-climate wines.

Their vision was simple: to create wines that reflected the unique character of the Great Southern while maintaining the highest standards of craftsmanship.

Growing up within this pioneering family business, Kim developed a deep appreciation for both the art and science of winemaking. She witnessed firsthand the challenges and rewards of building a winery from the ground up and learned the importance of resilience, patience, and attention to detail.

Crafting Wines with Character

Kim's winemaking philosophy centres on allowing each vineyard block and vintage to express its own personality.

Rather than forcing a style, she believes the best wines are those that honestly reflect their environment. This hands-on approach guides every stage of production, from vineyard management through to fermentation, maturation, and bottling.

The cool climate of Mount Barker provides ideal conditions for producing elegant, balanced wines with intensity of flavour and natural freshness. Under Kim's guidance, Galafrey's wines have earned a reputation for consistency, quality, and a true sense of place.

Honouring Tradition While Looking Forward

While deeply respectful of the traditions established by previous generations, Kim is equally committed to ensuring Galafrey continues to evolve.

She embraces modern techniques where they enhance quality while maintaining the values that have always defined the winery: family, authenticity, and a passion for excellence.

Her leadership has helped strengthen Galafrey's reputation among wine lovers both in Australia and internationally, while ensuring the winery remains firmly connected to its roots.

A Personal Connection

For Kim, one of the greatest rewards of winemaking is sharing wine with others.

Every bottle tells a story—of the season, the vineyard, the people who nurtured the fruit, and the generations who have contributed to Galafrey's journey. Whether welcoming visitors to the cellar door or connecting with customers across Australia, Kim enjoys sharing that story and helping people discover the wines she loves.

The Future of Galafrey

As Galafrey Wines looks to the future, Kim remains focused on producing wines that honour the family's legacy while inspiring new generations of wine enthusiasts.

Her vision is simple: to continue crafting exceptional wines that celebrate the beauty of the Great Southern and the unique character of Mount Barker.

Every vintage is a new chapter in that story—and Kim is proud to lead Galafrey into its next generation.
