Tasting Notes

Deep ruby red in colour, this Cabernet Sauvignon is immediately captivating with lifted aromas of violets, cassis and blackcurrant layered over hints of dark chocolate and subtle earthiness. Classic cool-climate notes of mulberry leaf and dried herbs add complexity and elegance.

The palate is rich yet refined, with vibrant sweet berry fruit supported by beautifully integrated, fine-grained tannins and exceptional structure. Powerful without being heavy, it finishes long, balanced and effortlessly elegant. A superb expression of Mount Barker Cabernet Sauvignon and one of Galafrey’s finest releases to date.

Vineyard

Fruit is sourced from our 49-year-old, 12-hectare dry-grown vineyard in Mount Barker, Great Southern. Grown without irrigation on ancient gravelly loam soils, these mature vines naturally produce low yields and small berries packed with concentrated flavour and tannin.

The region’s cool climate promotes slow, even ripening, delivering fruit with outstanding intensity, freshness and ageing potential.

Vintage Comments

The 2022 vintage commenced around two weeks later than recent years following a wet winter and spring, before periods of intense summer heat and strong easterly winds. Cooler autumn conditions encouraged slow ripening, rewarding patient vineyard management and experienced winemaking.

The resulting wines display remarkable depth of colour, concentrated flavours and beautifully defined tannins, while maintaining the elegance and balance for which the Great Southern is renowned.

Winemaking

Harvested at optimal ripeness, the fruit underwent extended skin contact to maximise colour, flavour and natural tannin extraction before maturing for a minimum of two years in quality French oak barrels. This careful approach enhances complexity and structure while allowing the vibrant dry-grown fruit to remain the hero.

The result is a classically styled Cabernet Sauvignon with exceptional balance, refined oak integration and excellent cellaring potential, reflecting both the character of the vineyard and the unique conditions of the 2022 vintage.
