Tasting Notes

A vibrant dark ruby red with a fine, persistent bead. Aromas of freshly cracked black pepper, ripe plum and blackberry leap from the glass, layered with subtle spice. The palate is smooth, balanced and luscious, bursting with rich black fruit flavours and finishing long, fresh and vibrant. Best enjoyed well chilled.

Vineyard

Fruit is sourced from our 49-year-old, 12-hectare Dry Grown Vineyard in Mount Barker. Our old vines are unirrigated, producing naturally low yields and small berries that concentrate flavour, colour and tannin. Grown on ancient gravelly loam soils in the cool climate of the Great Southern, the fruit benefits from slow ripening and exceptional varietal expression.

Vintage Comments

The 2022 vintage began around two weeks later than recent years, recalling seasons of the past. Following a wet winter and spring, summer delivered intense heatwaves and persistent easterly winds before autumn arrived early with significant rainfall. Patience and careful vineyard management were rewarded with wines of excellent acidity, vibrant colour and concentrated flavour.

Winemaking

Shiraz from two vineyard blocks—our mature old vines and younger 20-plus-year-old vines—was mechanically harvested and crafted using the traditional Méthode Traditionnelle. The wine spent 18 months on lees, developing creamy complexity while retaining vibrant fruit expression and a fine bead. The result is a richly flavoured sparkling Shiraz with freshness, texture and remarkable drinkability.
