TASTING NOTES

Deep, dense ruby in colour with a dark plum hue, this cool-climate Shiraz opens with lifted aromas of black pepper, exotic spice and ripe blackberry, layered over subtle vanillin French oak. The medium-bodied palate is supple and silky, offering generous flavours of dark plum and black cherry balanced by savoury spice and finely integrated oak. Elegant rather than overpowering, it unfolds gradually with soft tannins and a persistent finish, showcasing the restrained power and finesse that define Great Southern Shiraz.

VINEYARD

Fruit is sourced from our 49-year-old, 12-hectare dry-grown vineyard in Mount Barker, Western Australia. Our mature vines are not irrigated, a rarity in modern viticulture, naturally producing low yields and small berries with exceptional concentration of flavour, colour and tannin. Planted on ancient gravelly loam soils and benefiting from the region's cool climate, the vines ripen slowly to develop depth, complexity and balance. Cane-pruned and yielding approximately two tonnes per hectare, the vineyard consistently produces fruit of remarkable character.

VINTAGE COMMENTS

The 2019 vintage was challenging but ultimately rewarding, with some varieties experiencing yield reductions of between 30% and 60% due to extreme seasonal conditions. Despite these difficulties, fruit quality remained high, producing wines of excellent concentration and structure. Standout performers included the Müller blend and Whole Bunch Shiraz, reflecting the resilience of the vineyard and the quality of the season.

WINEMAKING

Mechanically harvested from two vineyard blocks—our old-vine Shiraz, planted more than 35 years ago, and younger vines now over 20 years of age—the fruit was fermented with extended skin contact to maximise colour, flavour and structure. Matured for a minimum of two years in premium French oak, the wine reflects our commitment to meticulous viticulture and thoughtful winemaking. The result is a harmonious, cool-climate Shiraz that expresses both varietal character and the unique terroir of Mount Barker with elegance and longevity.
