Tasting Notes

Deep, dark plum in colour, this elegant cool-climate Shiraz opens with lifted aromas of black pepper, spice and subtle vanilla oak. The palate is medium-bodied and beautifully balanced, combining rich dark fruit with savoury complexity, supple tannins and finely integrated French oak. Smooth and persuasive, it builds quietly before revealing impressive depth and a long, refined finish.

Vineyard

Fruit is sourced from our 49-year-old, 12-hectare dry-grown vineyard in Mount Barker, Great Southern. Grown without irrigation on ancient gravelly loam soils, these mature vines naturally produce low yields and intensely flavoured berries with exceptional concentration and structure.

The cool-climate conditions of the region encourage slow ripening, allowing the fruit to develop outstanding balance, depth and varietal expression while maintaining freshness and elegance.

Vintage Comments

After several dry, lower-yielding seasons, 2021 returned to the fast-paced, weather-driven vintage conditions that define the Great Southern. Regular rainfall through spring and summer, including a notably wet February, combined with periods of intense heat and drying easterly winds to create wines of remarkable concentration and power.

The resulting reds display exceptional flavour intensity, generous structure and impressive ageing potential, making 2021 a standout vintage for Shiraz.

Winemaking

Fruit from both mature old-vine and younger vineyard blocks was harvested at optimal ripeness and fermented on skins to maximise colour, flavour and tannin development. The wine was then matured for a minimum of two years in a carefully selected combination of French, American and Hungarian oak.

Each oak origin contributes its own distinctive character: American oak adds rich mocha and chocolate notes, Hungarian oak brings subtle clove and warming spice, while French oak provides elegant vanilla, cedar and fine structure. This layered approach creates a beautifully balanced Shiraz with depth, complexity and a refined spice profile that complements the concentrated dry-grown fruit.
